GUAYNABO, PUERTO RICO. FEBRUARY 2, 2015 --- Get your jazz ears ready and start the countdown for the twenty-sixth (#26) edition of the Puerto Rico Heineken JazzFest. During the press conference held at La Bodega de Méndez & Co. in Guaynabo, Álvarez gave details on some of the performers that will join the celebration of the most complete jazz festival in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, to take place from Thursday, March 17, 2016 through Sunday, March 20, 2016 at the Tito Puente Amphitheatre in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This year, the Puerto Rico Heineken JazzFest will honor composer, saxophonist and arranger of Puerto Rican descent, Ray Santos, and will have over eleven high quality artistic presentations that add up to the 268 that the festival has offered since its first edition in 1991.
Luquillo born trumpeter Charlie Sepúlveda, Ralph Irizarry and his group Timbalaye, Argentinian guitarist Luis Salinas, Jose “Furito” Ríos, Mexican drummer Antonio Sánchez, Paquito D’Rivera, the students at Puerto Rico in Berklee and Italian singer Roberta Gambarini are some of the prominent jazz figures that will participate during the 4-day musical feast. The festival will close with a tribute to Ray Santos by the Puerto Rico Heineken JazzFest Big Band. On Thursday, Heineken will introduce a new concept - “JazzLab”, where a fusion of various musical rhythms will combine with traditional jazz for the public’s enjoyment.
Luis Álvarez, executive producer of the Puerto Rico Heineken JazzFest, and Vice-President of the Liquor Division at Méndez & Co. said: “The “JazzLab” concept tented us and we decided to give it a try this year so we can offer the new generation some of the musical fusions they enjoy, allowing us to give a new, fresh and interesting turn to our offering.”
RAY SANTOS’ RECOGNITION
This year the festival is dedicated and plays tribute to a renowned and recognized jazz figure, whose musical career transcends and helps develop Latin jazz locally and internationally. This distinction is awarded to the composer, arranger and saxophonist of Puerto Rican descent, Ray Santos. Santos, who has over 50 years of musical success in his shoulders, expressed his deep gratitude and excitement with the recognition he’ll receive next month in his beloved Puerto Rico. In the last day of the event (Sunday 20th), the festival will close with a special tribute that will honor his career.
COMMEMORATIVE POSTER
On the other hand, the Puerto Rico Heineken JazzFest already has a commemorative poster that will be used as part of the festival’s image and promotional efforts during the event. The piece, titled “Mambo Puertorro” from Humacao native artist Abdiel A. Arena Alicea, was chosen between the 27 art proposals submitted in different graphic formats. The poster’s selection was made after an open call to professional and amateur artist in Puerto Rico. A select group of people with experience in graphic design, as well as Méndez & Co. and Heineken representatives chose Abdiel’s piece. He will be rewarded with $2,000 plus 4 jazz passes to attend the Puerto Rico Heineken JazzFest. Three other pieces were chosen to receive a honor mention recognition for their quality, creativeness and originality. These are: “Maestro Santos” from Julián Ruíz, “Rey de las Estrellas” from Krist Feliz Ayala and “Saxonando” from Felipe Cuchi Santiago.
This year’s edition will reunite excellent local and international groups and music artists during the 4-day festival.
